Just to let all you fire-feens know, I have received approval from the Society Seneschal for us to spin at the party. FWIW, Charla's apprentice is setting everything up this year.

Re: GW Known World Party
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 6:38 PMOk so the question is...
who all is interested in spinning fire? cuz i'm thinking about some costume stuff with a mask and all that and well, if we're going to be spinning might as well not waste the time on some nice garb just for the party to have to take it off and blah blah blah....
so who all is partaking? -

Re: GW Known World Party

Re: GW Known World Party/Attire
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 1:12 PMHi all!
Had a request from the guy coordinating the shindig. He asked that we try to maintain the theme (14-16C Italian masked party or something) while we perform. We told him that billowing garb isn't very conducive to spinning, so he asked that we try to wear masks and maybe garb that a performer of that time would wear. I don't know if I can find anything specific about the garb, but I'll try to do some sort of mask and then see if it obstructs my vision too much. If we can't safely do it then everyone will understand. But I wanted to toss it out for everyone.

Re: GW Known World Party Spinning vs Dancing....
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 5:50 AMOk i have a mask already ;) its just finding some garb to go with the mask that is kinda in theme and not just totally what i do every time...so any link would be helpful! i've looked up some stuff but didnt have time to look really hard....
another thing...and i bring this up only because its happened in years past and i want to make sure it doesnt happen again. We need to make sure that we A. have dedicated drummers for spinning, and B. switch off those dedicated drummers with the dancers, because having 2 lots of drummers in 2 different areas doesnt work, and you cant keep the folks from dancing. being a dancer and a fire performer, usually fire wins out over dancing. if we are going to make it so that its a fire show, and then free for all dancing we need to keep it short and sweet. dancers get really antsy and want to dance and its hard when the drummers are drumming for the fire folks and we're taking 2 hours to do a performance. so we need to think about that. I for one want to play with fire and dance so, i think it would be nice if we kinda switched off a bit, kinda like what Anton was talking about on a different thread sharing time between dancers and bards. the dancers will need a break and so will we, so i think doing shifts would work, but we need to talk about it a bit IMHO.
cheers! -

Re: GW Known World Party Spinning vs Dancing....
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 8:08 AMI think I understand your suggestion. Sounds like you are suggesting we have two separate areas, one for fire and one for dancing. Each would have its own drummers and we would alternate between who is performing. This sounds like a managing nightmare, but I suppose that if someone wants to wrangle it we could see how it works. This “wrangler” would have to ensure each set of drummers understood and agreed to only play when their area of performance was active. To provide entertainment flow, they would also have to ensure which ever group is resting had a few minutes warning before stopping the group that is performing.
Just thinking out loud, if the two performing groups were, say, opposite each other, then the crowd would be drawn back and forth. If this is an issue, wouldn’t it be better to put the two groups together? Which would maybe negate the need for two sets of drummers?

Re: GW Known World Party Spinning vs Dancing....
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 8:46 AMnoooo i want to avoid two seperate areas, because we've had that happen before with 2 areas of 2 drummers and it was a nightmare!!! we need to just share the drummers between the spinners and dancers. otherwise the dancers will get their own drummers and there will be 2 areas.....i dont know how to keep this from happening, but believe me, dancers will tell us to bugger off and go get their own area and their own drummers. i would like to see if we can avoid that from happening.... -

Re: GW Known World Party Spinning vs Dancing....
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 3:06 PMyea we have to be careful cause there are so many of performing,,,we shouldn't have this super duper long show that kills the party...cause it's happened before. hard to judge when you are the performer because you're having fun.
a recommendation i'd like to toss out there that we actually did two years ago at the KWP is that if there are 5 people that are going to dance w/ fans that should be done at the same time. we usually have a huge area to perform in and if we're cautious and aware i think it looks really cool and prevents the audience from getting bored w/ the same tools done over and over. ya know same for poi and stuff too since we will have a lot of performers.
oh and i have a mask planned, but i'm not making an outfit that i'll never wear again. -

Re: GW Known World Party Spinning vs Dancing....
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 8:21 PMSo who's Heading up the performance scheduling?
I would like to do the Poi and possibly staff and/ or nunchuck (the throwing of the nuns) / of corse the whip is always fun too.
I too would like to keep the fire short and sweet. And if there is some kind of premeditation to this we could maybe actually do it. -
