I have a mundane friend who will be moving to Fort Hood in the summer. His wife has a Master's in Environmental Management, so they figure that Austin is the best place for her to find a job. He was wondering the usual:
1) How far away from Fort Hood can he live and still make that early morning commute? We're talking the usual crack of dawn commute to make it in time for Physical Training.
2) What are some of the better towns and neighborhoods to live in? (They hope to buy a house)
3) The tough one - with her MS in Environmental Management, his wife will be looking for something in that field. That usually means government or non-profit, but good related work in the corporate world would be OK. That would be something like compliance. Does anyone know about such things?
My apologies for bringing up such a mundane topic. Thanks in advance for any help.

Whose knowledge of Austin is limited to the fact that Bryn Gwlad is there.
Well, there is that pool hall we went to after that Regional Practice once - I enjoyed that.

Re: A friend moving to Austin
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 6:38 AMI have a friend that lives in Salado and works in north Austin. It's quite a commute though and he gets to work really early (630 or 7am) to avoid the traffic. It is a cute small town north of Williamson County. The new toll road (SH130) also extends just north of Georgetown and south to Austin. There isn't any traffic on it so it opens up more options.
As far as the job goes I work for the TCEQ - state envrionmental agency. I work in compliance, but we don't have any positions open in our region right now. The central office (where above friend works) is located up north though so she could look there.. www.tceq.state.tx.us. There is also a Waco Regional Office which is much closer to Ft Hood. Problem is the pay as an investigator isn't great to start out w/...esp for someone w/ a masters.
There are tons of consulting agencies in this area as well. Also the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), Brazos River Authority (BRA) which is located more north, the City of Austin, Travis County, City of Georgetown, City of Round Rock, and the City of Waco, to name a few, are all options.
If she wants to contact me w/ any questions feel free to message me for my email.

Re: A friend moving to Austin
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 12:12 PMMiles,
Having been stationed at FT Hood years ago, the farthest I would suggest from either Ft. Hood, or Austin for that matter, would be Salado. It's on I35 just south of Temple. Probably about a 30 min commute and Salado is about 30 to 40 mins from Austin, depending on traffic and the time the person leaves to go to work. There's also Florence on SH 195 which is south of Killeen. Nice little town, but way expensive. I think it ranks up there with towns closer to Austin price wise. Florance is about 30 mins from the main gate of Ft. Hood, and about 40 mins to downtown Austin. Either way, you're looking at a commute either way. Your friends wife might be better off trying to find environmental work on Ft. Hood so that they're both close to work.
Hope this helps,

Re: A friend moving to Austin
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 5:07 PMThank you everyone! I will forward all this good information to my friend as soon as I get home later tonight. (Yes, I'm sneaking a look at Tribe from work.)
Because they won't be moving until summer, they can monitor those websites for jobs to open up.
Thanks again.
