Their square slant wall mini tent 81/2'x81/2' is $132.00. Period looking and not bad for one person or for an armoring tent...or an extra tent to keep all of garb racks in...:)

The Viking wedge/Convertible for $189 sounds pretty cool too...

I like the idea of being able to lift one whole side of the tent and make it into a sunshade.

Sven, I think my wedge is just like your wedge. Have you ever raised the side up on your tent? I thought that raising it up would be a good idea, too, until I saw the way the tent flaps are sewn together at the top. Just wondering...............

This one is designed to lift, ours arent.

Both types are on the website, and the convertible one is less expensive -go figure...

I won't try to put up the side of my wedge then....... What I really want is a bell wedge - I really like the way they look.

              Yeah, Iike those too...

Before I got my wedge, I thought about getting one of those -eventhough it would be totally wrong for my period.

I got the French Bell anyway, even though it is totally wrong for my period. (from Midwest, I might add). I feel that there is more usable space then the Viking wedge, but that is just what I think.

Besides there were 6 girls at #3kings last year, 5 girls in it at Gulf, and 4 at Lilies. It IS the party tent!!!

(and my flap can be propped open for a shade. Which sounds all kinds of wrong, but I dont know how else to say it!!)

Ian and I got our round tent from Midwest and we love it. I recommend them to everyone.

There's a pic of it in my photos I think.

    Dredging up an old thread...

I am looking at buying a period tent and I'm trying to decide which one. I contacted Midwest and they will be getting 13 1/2 foot rounds (white only) in soon along with Vikings in multiple color combos.

    Here are my questions:
How hot do these get in the summer? There aren't windows so I'm wondering what kind of ventilation you have.
Do the rounds come in multiple pieces? They seem too heavy for one person (me) to carry easily (guesstimating the 13 1/2 around 65lbs since the 12 1/2 weighs 55lbs which would be pushing it) - The sidewall tent is only 33lbs so I could carry that myself with no problem.
I'm doing things backwards...I have a nice bed so I'm wondering if my queen bed will fit in the round easily or if there is a lot of wasted space?
What do you use for ground cover?
What do you use for poles? The aluminum pipes or wooden poles?
Any other thoughts or questions I've missed (I'm sure to have more)

I'd probably only use it for big camping events like Steppes, Gothic, Gulf War and Pennsic when I'd be spending more than one or two nights in it.

I think the rounds are probably the heaviest to deal with but you could use only a center pole that can be pipe which is easier to break down. But you'd need a lot of stakes - just think about Corwin's tent. I've been thinking that buying one of those $125 tents like Orion and Grimm had would be great for small events or when I'm camping alone. Your bed would more than likely fit into that 13 1/2 round with ease.

yea i think sometimes in the round tent there is a little wasted space too cause beds, tables, etc are straight edged. i can't carry it by myself and i'm a pretty determined little girl. i like robert/ciara and evets/aleksandra's square tents the best.

I like my Viking wedge. It works well for 1-2 people. I estimate it weighs ~50-60lbs. I use black iron (gas pipe) for poles - same as Jan, Duncan & Ulrich. Its super-easy to set up, I can set it up by myself in under 15min. Ive never had a problem with rain leaking-in, I just use carpets for the floor.

The square ones, like Robert's & Evet's, probably have more useable space.

The round one, like Corwin's, is a major PITA to set up - allthough I cant help but wonder how much that would change if he'd use side poles and a pipe center pole instead of a 4x4 log.

Anton and I have bad tent Juju for the viking wedge. We used the black iron poles the first two times we set it up and the poles broke at the threading in the middle both times. I think the tall viking wedge is just not made to withstand the midwest weather, at least that was our experience (as the poles nearly killed us landing on us in the night). The third time we tried 2x4s which we had seen at Lilies, those torqued and broke at the corner connections. Granted we are the only ones who have had a problem with this that I know of. Part of the problem is that you can't reach the center pole once it's at full height. We ended up getting a regent from Panther and absolutely adore it.

All that being said we are selling the viking wedge for $270 ($100 less than it is new). It has been set up 3 times and is still new for all intents and purposes. If you are comign to Lilies and want to buy a tent let us know.

In a different forum, I received the suggestion that if it is too heavy to carry I should look into a duffle bag with wheels for carrying it. I'm wondering how practical that might be...

yea that 4x4x10? log is gonna scare the crap outta me and hurt a lot when it falls in our sleep some night.
duffle bag w/ wheels sounds like a good idea!
oh and follow the directions for waterproofing it or just pay for them to do it..so worth it.

Ian and I have the12 1/2 foot round. I got a rubbermaid tote with wheels on one end. The tent fits nicely in it and I can drag it all by myself. Its in 3 pieces: top and two walls.

Of course Ian overdid it on our center pole (13 foot 4X4) so it takes a couple of men to get it up *giggle*.

      :) I love our tent.

They had some nice pricing on bolts of plain waterproof canvas as well. I think one day I'd like to have canvas covering for our "garage" tent. It's just so much easier for me to set that one up alone if I have to, despite it's size.

I'm seriously contemplating an alternate roof and walls for a downsized version of it for smaller weekend events. Maybe I'll be able to manage sewing a canvas cover for it for that purpose.

Actually, at a recent event, they had a decorating contest for the garage pavilions. It was kind of interesting what people can do with regular pavilions to hide the mundanity. There was one woman who had started, but not finished, doing exactly what you are thinking about doing. There were others that put up fabric curtains over the plastic walls to hide them and another who added silk ivy around the windows in addition to the curtains. They didn't come close to looking period but they didn't stand out as much either.

On the other hand, I got a silly idea at the gym last night and tried to figure out how much I can carry. I can carry a 75lb barbell across the gym and back but I had to put it down halfway back mainly because of my grip more than the weight. It hurt my hands! That was also after doing it with no problem with a 60lb barbell and full workout. I know the tent would be bulkier but it gave me an idea of how much it would weigh.

If you get the slant wall mini, have them add the mud flaps/ sod flaps(at least 8"), that will solve 90% of the problems with those tents.

if you dont' know what I mean, ask.

Some tent makers think they are not needed, but I disagree strongly.

FY my pavillion is a 19*19 square 12 poles around the outside, 21*21 foot print, and i dont' set up up unless i'm going to a long
event wtih company because it's a total pain.

I'm looking at a french bell wedge, with painted seams, probabaly from panther, becuase i dont' like the way midwest
makes their bell wedges.. too short, not elegant looking at all.

Great idea! I've actually already got stuff to make curtains for the interior. It's gonna be really nice looking once I get them done up.

I love the tent I bought but I got it on ebay. I can carry it and set it up all by myself. After drowning last year at Bordermarch I decided NEVER AGAIN! This one has a built in ground cover, 4 half moon windows, 12 lines (if you don't count the front flap that only has to be staked if it is really really windy), 100% cotton canvas and it's round so only 1 foldup type center pole plus an A frame pole that goes in the door. Takes maximum of 10 minutes to set it up unless it's windy then 15 minutes. I was warm and dry at Ravens Fort's Saint Valentine's "Mud-lees".
