Rhoadd has some upcoming projects that we need our friends help with. Most of these projects involve the camp at Gulf Wars. Projects such as making portable holes, the shower enclosure (including a changing area), camp walls, several "Dream Torches" (as seen at Bordermarch this past year), war shields, upgrading the kitchen trailer and purchasing a period tent for HIs Majesty Aaron.
Several of us will be getting together for work nights or weekends to get these projects done. What we need are donations of materials or funds to get these done. Here is what we need;
Kithcen Trailer;
Sink
More water proof storage - chuck box
Shower;
2x2's - need 6
closet dowel rods - need 7 at 5' lengths
canvas drop cloths from Home Depot
four shower curtain liners with rings
War shields
Roll pipe or similar material
paint - black, gold, and silver
aluminum for basket hilts (think road signs)
Leather for straps
Buckles for straps
Camp Walls
Paint; green, black, gold
So far, for Aaron's tent we've collected about $500 and we still need $600. I've have put together a Pay Pal account to accept donations. You can include instructions for your donation to stipulate that it is for a specific project or Aaron's tent. We appreciate any and all help.

Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 3:01 PMDo we need to fund any "ghost" campers to help with getting common area land? I saw somewhere that everyone only gets 10x15...that isn't a lot of room...I understand that ghost campers are a common practice at Pennsic.

Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 9:01 AMaaaahhhhh ha!! ok i've done work like that on silk. i believe i still have some gutta, and even some dextrin which helps a bit to slow the dye down. it would probably be the best thing to get the already hemmed scarves from dharma like they say...dharma is a great company and have great prices. 8mm silk is awesome, you can throw it in the washer and dryer, iron it and such. the dyes have to be set with some heat as well...some folks use a steamer, some folks use the microwave. i have used the microwave and burned my silk, so just be careful if you go that route, but it works. you also want to make sure you wash the silk before you dye it, becuase it has stuff on the silk that needs to come off with some detergent. they make a product called synthropol for that exact thing. i have some of that as well....i have never used regular detergent, but woolite might do the same thing. i use a big pot with a strainer in it to steam....put water in, wrap the silk in news material, and i wouldnt use newspaper either because it leaks dye....they also sell plain newspaper material from dharma....and put the wrapped silk in a strainer. put a lid on and steam at least 45 min, take it out rinse it out in the sink...throw it in the dryer and then iron it. i have never had any of my dyes run :) they do a great job of explaining it :) should be a fun project, having a stretcher for the silk is awesome....i use and old door frame and some clamps to stretch my silk. oh ya and vinegar...need vinegar...its a smelly process...your kitchen will smell if you steam in it....and bending over sucks so if you can possibly get the frames up on some sawhorses that would be the best. i've spent an entire day dying silk and at the end my back is killing me ;) -

Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 9:37 AMWe've been discussing this on the FG list. I have clear and black gutta and dyes and silk. The scarves I saw on the Dharma site that are hemmed are not the right shape or size. I've seen banners made that are cut to the edge of the gutta and that keep them from raveling. Come on down and join in the fun.:) -

Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 10:32 AMI like those really tall ones that kind of bend over at the top...it would be cool to have a couple of them at the entrance....
-
Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:39 AMi've got silk thread that i use to hem the edges.....i dont use gutta on the edges because i'm worried it might not hold and then start to ravel. the thread is also dyeable.....
unfortunately right now our RF event is the weekend of the 16th, and i am looking at possibly having to move a clilent that same weekend. not sure if i'll be able to go to the event even at this point.....but that weekend unfortunately doesnt work out for me :( i would love to come over and join the fun tho!!!! so if there's going to be another weekend be sure to let me know! -

Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 8:17 AMWe had a good work day Saturday at Caladins making portable holes. We also got started on the war shields from supplies that Caladin donated. I think we made a total of 16 so with the 10 we already have that should be plenty for what we need.
Thanks again to everyone who showed up to work; Sven, Evets, Caladin, Ulrich.
Next work weekend is on the 16th. Focusing on war shields, shower, gate, silk pennants. -

Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 4:27 PMI spent today working on my bed for GW - yes, selfish but trust me...you will like me better with a good night's sleep!
This is relevant because I have some decent size pieces of good quality birch plywood leftover. I think there is enough to make a medium size table (about 2.5' x 2.5') if someone wants to help me with it. I'm thinking X pedestal base with something on the bottom of the table top to hold it in place? Of if there is a better use for it, let me know. -
-
Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 7:50 AMIf you can manage to bring it this weekend we can work on making it into a table if you'd like. -

Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 9:28 PM
I made 2 plastic shield baskets as prototypes to test out my new strip heater,
they look pretty good, there are a few imperfections, partly from my pattern and partly from not
taking wire expansion into effect when i first built it...
Took it apart an reengineered it, it's better now... Not really sure it's faster than aluminum, but it's ALOT easier.
I have enough sheet for 3-4 more, if someone wants to make one. Free to rhooad if you do the work >:)

Mon, February 18, 2008 - 1:32 PMWhat a great weekend! Thank you Robert and Ciara for opening your home to let us work on stuff. I know they got more done in the garage than we did on the silk painting but progress was made and there were many lessons learned!
Thanks! -

Re: Getting Ready for Gulf Wars
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 8:09 PMIt was a great weekend and we did get a lot done. I want to thank everyone who showed up to help us - we had people from Austin, San Antonio, Huntsville area and even Beaumont! Once again, when Rhoadd and Amazons get together it's always a party and this weekend was no exception. For those of you who missed it you missed a great time!!!
I also want to thank everyone who has donated to our cause this year, both in time, effort and money. Without you we couldn't have accomplished as much as we have - but we did and your efforts are greatly appreciated. Your energy, drive, and genorisity are inspiring to me! These are the things that make a household a great household! It can't be done by just two, three or four people. It takes a team effort and I personally want you to know that when you step up to the plate and pitch in it is you who make all the difference in the world. These are the things that keep the dream alive!!!
Thanks folks for just showing up and being there when you were needed!!!
