To paraphrase, A relatively new fighter collapsed from a heart attack at neat the final resurection battle of the day at Estrella. Paramedics arived and treated him, but he passed away before the life flight helicopter arived.
A little more detail can be found here (in the first and second paragraphs).

Tue, February 19, 2008 - 9:14 PMI feel for his family....
Though, there are worse ways to go out... on a field of battle, surrounded by your friends, doing what you love...
We should all be so lucky. -

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 2:07 PMI'm with Sven and Mirabelis on this one. From what Anton said, it looks as if the man knew the risks and he chose to do what he loved. It is always hardest on the ones left behind, but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do to make life worthwhile. Bless them all. -

Wed, February 20, 2008 - 7:24 AMTrue enough -
But you gotta know you're limits and train, train, train.... But even then that's no guarantee that some unknown issue won't come up during this kind of extreme stress. We see it happen in other sports as well. An athlete at the top of his form, trains vigorously every day then goes out on the field one day and collapses due to heart problems he didn't even know he had. Or worse, succumbs to heat exhaustion.
The best you can do is take care of yourself and hopefully these things won't happen to you! -

Re: Off topic but everyone that fights should read!!
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 8:29 AMHe probably inhaled a lot more dirt than he ever thought he would out at Estrella.....once the dust setteled and they figured out what was gonig on....its sooooo dirty out there ! -

Re: Off topic but everyone that fights should read!!
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 12:13 PMNo...wasn't dust....there was more rain than anything....the field was mud, not dust.
Apparently the man was older, and on medication already...and had had a previous heart attack.
We heard that there was a chopper coming in, then they cancelled the chopper. I knew it was bad then.
HRM Aaron came to Calontir camp with Us after the battles that day, and there we all sang "No No Bis" for the departed. There was nary a dry eye in the crowd, and it was an emotional day. If you have ever heard the voices of Calontir sing No no Bis, you will understand.
My friends from Caid did not know the man, and it seems that he hadn't been playing for long.
The saddest part was that his wife was one of the people doing CPR on him....
This was a heart attack that could have happened at any time in any place. Certainly, a 90 minute res. battle isn't the safest place for a person with a poor heart...May he rest in peace! -

Re: Off topic but everyone that fights should read!!
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 2:12 PMHis name was Al. He was so new to the SCA, he didn't have and SCA name yet. They had just finished his armor so he could fight at the war. Although I never met the man, he was an extended part of my family. He was my friend, even though we'd never met. We shared moments on the field, even though we never crossed swords to my knowledge. We shared a dream. Goodbye Al.
